Comfort Zone Perceptions,
Front Gallery, Sept 2013, Off The Kerb
'Man Strives Upward' & 'Beast Within Runs Free' (two piece installation)
In the comfort zone everything is familiar, it's known and expected. There you are productive and time consuming. Perception is how you see, interpret yourself, others your situation.
Structural supports are set against over-scaled plains of cut-out silhouette which combine to resist unbalance, confinement, restraint, and imply movement or desired direction, with escape unlikely. Assembled with industrial components and production processes exposed, the works present figurative or animal analogies of personal roles scripted within a work-life balance framework. 'Beast Within' with a large red heart, sharp teeth and angry demeanour looks at escaping the stresses of work and life in search of a balance. Suggesting in this instance that big, bold, even dramatic efforts are required to manage time and competing demands. Looking beyond our carefully crafted silhouettes, perhaps we'll see ourselves as something other than human and expose our vulnerable supporting framework.
